The department of Veterinary Surgery and Radiology is one of the oldest departments of Bombay Veterinary College. The department is having most of the instruments and equipments for U.G., P.G. and Ph D teaching and research. The department is spread with sufficient space. One of the oldest Animal Hospital of BSPCA is attached with this department and since the staff of this department is providing honorary services to the hospital the hospital is allowing the U.G., P.G. and Ph D students to work and use materials for learning in this way the U.G., P.G. and Ph D students of this college is getting sufficient Clinical cases of Surgery for hands on training.
In 1996, Dr. L. B. Sarkate became the Professor and Head and he attempted to develop the department under his dynamic leadership. In 2002, he organized the 26th Annual Congress and Symposium of Veterinary Surgery for the first time in a different way. During the same period, the department developed total intravenous general anaesthetic techniques using Propofol in equine, canine, feline, and bovine. Under his leadership, the department established an Endoscopy and Laparoscopy unit. Under his guidance, the maximum number of recommendations were approved from this department in the Animal Science Research Council of MAFSU, Nagpur, and were beneficial to the farmers and field veterinarians.
The department of Surgery identified the need for companion animal surgery, and in the year 2010-11, a first batch of diploma in companion animal surgery was started for the first time in the country. A total of 120 students have been awarded M.V.Sc. degrees, and three have earned Ph.D. degrees from this department.
The departmental staff provides services to the renowned Animal Hospital affiliated with the college, performing various major and minor operations on all species of animals throughout the year.
The history of the Department of Surgery can be traced back to the inception of the Bombay Veterinary College in 1886. At this time, the main duty of the veterinarian was the treatment of animals, highlighting their importance in the veterinary profession. In the early period, the subjects of Surgery and Anatomy were combined into one department with the Professor of Surgery as the head. This arrangement continued until 1957 when a separate chair for the Professor of Anatomy was created. Dr. Mohiuddin, Dr. S.R. Chaddha, Dr. K.R. Alur, and Dr. S.R. Hattangady are among the famous surgeons who honored the chair during their respective periods.
Dr. S.R. Hattangadi, a renowned canine and equine surgeon, headed the department after its separation from Anatomy. Similarly, Obstetrics, Gynecology, and Infertility, which were initially part of the Surgery department, were also separated to form a new independent department of Obstetrics and Gynecology.
The Department of Surgery, under Prof. S.R. Hattangadi, was recognized for the post-graduate course of two years duration leading to an M.V.Sc. degree by the University of Bombay in 1961.
Dr. K.S. Deshpande, M.V.Sc., Ph.D., F.R.V.A.C., took over as Professor of Surgery in 1972. He made significant contributions during his tenure, teaching the art and science of surgery to many students through his excellent and lucid teaching. His students worked across the country, raising awareness about the importance of successful surgery under field conditions. He guided many successful veterinary surgeons and demonstrated that thoracic surgery in ruminants could be performed without ventilators under field conditions.
Subsequently, Dr. M. L. Kudale, Dr. M. B. Mantri, and Dr. C. C. Wakankar headed the department.
In 1996, Dr. L. B. Sarkate became the Professor and Head and worked dynamically to develop the department. In 2002, he organized the 26th Annual Congress and Symposium of Veterinary Surgery uniquely.
