About Veterinary Public Health & Epidemiology

In 1975, two eminent scientists, Dr. S.M. Ajinkya and Dr. J.B. Khot, initiated the Department of Food Hygiene and Public Health when many people were skeptical in recognizing the Paramount importance of veterinary public health in India. A small sapling planted by them has matured into a full-grown tree with its fruit reaching the length and breadth of globe. The department progressed by keeping pace with time under the able leadership of Dr. A. T. Sherikar, the then Professor and Head of the Department (1988) and Founder Vice Chancellor, Maharashtra Animal and Fishery Sciences University, Nagpur. The pioneering research work carried out at the Department of Food Hygiene and Public Health laid the foundation which was recognized nationally and internationally.

Under the able leadership of Dr. A. M. Paturkar, Professor and Head of the Department, Associate Dean, Former Vice Chancellor, the Department continued to flourish and subsequently led to the eventual upgradation of Western Regional Referral Laboratory for Meat and Meat Products Quality Standards to Centre of Excellence for Advanced Research on Animal Food Safety currently headed by Dr. R.J. Zende, Professor and Head of the Department alongwith Dr. V. M. Vaidya, Professor.

The laboratory has its own brand of team work, dedication, expertise, skill, punctuality whereby they have been identified and recognized by Agricultural and Processed Food Products Export Development Authority (APEDA) for certification of foods of animal origin. Besides, extensive work has been carried out by this department in the field of quality control and monitoring of livestock and poultry food. The pioneering research work to study the improvement of meat quality and shelf life by deploying various organic acids and irradiation Technology lead to the penultimate status of referral laboratory for meat and meat products quality standard. The department has successfully implemented several Ad Hoc research projects starting from 1990 till 2003 with the financial assistance from Indian Council of Agricultural Research, Ministry of Food Processing Industries, Government of India, (APEDA) and Bhabha Atomic Research Centre, standardize the protocol for meat speciation, heat stable BE antigens and species identification.

This department was identified as lead centre for the National Agricultural Technology Project on “Quality Assurance and Monitoring of Foods of Livestock Origin” due to the enormous were carried out during the last 19 years, the department has evolved into a referral laboratory facility and has successfully accomplished the NATP project “Establishment of Western Regional Referral Laboratory for Meat and Meat Products Quality Standards”. This facility was inaugurated by honourable Shri. Sharad Chandra Pawar Union Ministry of Agriculture Food Public Distribution and Consumer Affairs, Government of India and President, ICAR, New Delhi, on Friday 4th February, 2005.This is the first Veterinary laboratory to receive NABL accreditation in the country for pesticide residue analysis in complex food matrices of animal origin. The department would formulate policies for reorganization and reorientation of meat trade to suit global challenges.

Recently the Department of Veterinary Public Health of the Mumbai Veterinary College has established the “Centre of Excellence for Advanced Research on Animal Food Safety” with new and advanced technologies for detection & quantification of antibiotics, veterinary drugs and nutritional estimation in animal origin foods under World bank funded ICAR-NAHEP-CAAST project from 16th February 2022 inaugurated at the august hands of Shri Ajit ji Pawar, Deputy Chief Minister and Minister of Finance, Planning, Govt. of Maharashtra.
