The Medicine Department is one of the oldest sections of Mumbai Veterinary College, Parel, Mumbai - 400 012, established at the institution's inception in August 1886. The Department is situated in the S.P.C.A. campus. In the beginning, the Department was teaching Materia and Medica, Pharmacy, Clinical Medicine, and Toxicology. Later on, in 1960, as per the I.C.A.R. syllabus, Preventive Medicine was included in the teaching.
In 1961, post-graduate courses started in the subject and so far 135 students have obtained their M.V.Sc. degree and nine students have completed Ph.D. degrees. The Department offers the following courses leading to B.V.Sc. & A.H., M.V.Sc., and Ph.D.
The Department provides gratis technical services to India’s first and biggest affiliated BSPCA animal hospital “Bai Sakarbai Dinshaw Petit Hospital for Animals”. The faculty and the post-graduate scholars of the Department provide gratis technical services to the various Medical wards (General, Gastro, Distemper, Rabies, Cattle, Horse, etc.) of the hospital. In addition, the Department provides referral services to animal patients of Mumbai and adjacent states.
The Department of Clinical Medicine is at the forefront of education, research, and clinical services.
