Academic Programs and Curriculum

UG and PG Programes, Eligibility for admission and Mode of admission
  • Bachelor of Veterinary Science and Animal Husbandry – (B.V.Sc. & A.H.), Five years course after 10 + 2 years of school education. The B.V.Sc. & A.H students are required to complete 188 credit courses spread over 10 semesters. Out of this the students must spend six months (One Semester) internship. The College follows the syllabus prescribed by Veterinary Council of India and the admissions are based on score obtained at the state-level Competitive Entrance Examination.
  • Master of Veterinary Science (M.V.Sc.) in 18 different subjects; two years duration. For the M.V.Sc. course the students are required to successfully take 50 credit courses, in four semesters, consisting of 23 – 25 from the major subjects and 10 – 12 from the minor subjects. The students are required to write and defend research dissertation in the final semester that has credit load of 15
  • Doctor of Philosophy (Ph.D.) in 10 different subjects: minimum residency period three years. For Ph.D., the students have to complete 20 – 22 credit courses from the major discipline and 13 – 15 credits from minor disciplines. The students are required to undertake research spread over at least four semesters of 35 credits and write a thesis that is evaluated by external examiners.
  • Diploma in Veterinary Nuclear Medicine (DVNM): One year
    Curricula development/revision process
    For undergraduate the syllabus prescribed by the VCI is followed. For M.V.Sc. and Ph.D. the syllabi are framed by the University. In respect of any minor change or over-hauling of the curricula and syllabi following procedure is followed:
  • The initiation of the change in syllabi is usually is done in the Board of Studies since it consists of subject-matter experts. After the decision is taken the matter is referred to the ‘Faculty’ which deliberates on the resolution of the Board of Studies and if agreed the resolution is referred to Academic Council. In the Academic Council members from across the faculties discuss the issue and then the decision is taken. As per the University Statutes the curricula and syllabi are finally approved by the Academic Council and the decisions is communicated to the Executive Council for information

    Interdisciplinary approach in teaching:
  • The institute gives due importance to interdisciplinary teaching. As a principle the first and second year teaching revolves around the livestock farm wherein the students visit the farm routinely and participate in the farm activities. The third year teaching mostly revolves around the laboratories wherein the students are introduced to diagnostic methodologies emphasis being on relevance to problem-solving. The fourth and fifth year teaching revolves around TVCC wherein the students spend major part of the day in attending to clinical cases, treatment and surgery. The institute follows a system of academic audit wherein the ensuing academic program is specifically discussed and specially the practical are evolved in such a way that there remains continuity in approach and the students start with a problem definition and end with interpretation and strategy to solve the problem. In the livestock farms the students are encouraged to interact with the clinical students so that the relevance to health and productivity management can be established to their farm routine. In the TVCC, the discipline barriers have been minimized so that all the clinical and para-clinical departments get opportunity to participate.
  • For final year students weekly clinical conferences are organized wherein the students are encouraged to present interesting cases they have handled and discuss these with the staff and other students. In order to broaden the exposure canvas a joint clinical conference is organized with Pet Practitioners Association, wherein their members also present interesting cases.
  • In order to inculcate interdisciplinary and outreach approach to teaching the college has developed intranet facility to the students, wherein the course wares, lecture notes, important reading materials, etc. are available for the students to browse.
    Evaluation and Grading System
    In respect of undergraduate the College is following the syllabus prescribed by the Veterinary Council of India, which is the national regulatory body for veterinary education in the country. In respect of Masters’ program the syllabi are framed by the University keeping the broad guidelines of the ICAR as basic norms.
    The M.V.Sc. theses are sent for evaluation to one external examiner who is from out-of-the state and after getting his clearance of the theses as suitable for defense the external examiner is invited to examine the student for oral presentation of his work.
    The Ph.D. theses are sent for evaluation to two external examiners and when both approve the theses, one of them is invited to examine the students for defense.
    National and International Collaborations
    In this fast paced technological advancement any new development requires sound partnerships between several faculties, institutes and the industry. Different departments of BVC upon concerted efforts have successfully developed consortium in many areas. Institute multidisciplinary collaborative research projects with different state and national veterinary colleges as well as other institutes like Department of Pharmaceutical Technology, Department of Pharmaceutical Chemistry of the Institute of Chemical Technology (ICT), University of Mumbai, etc. for exploring new approaches have been submitted and some have also been sanctioned by different agencies like the ICAR, Department of Science and Technology, Department of Atomic Energy, Department of Biotechnology, World Bank, National Innovative Foundation, NAARM, etc.
    Collaboration with national and international industries, such as, Evialis, France, Provimi, Bangalore and LeSaffre, France, Bharat Serums & Vaccines Ltd., Indian Immunologicals, Sandoz, Alembic, Advance Biochemicals, has resulted in implementation of research projects. Students get to work on the latest technological research programmes and interdisciplinary research opens new avenues for the graduates.
